Springfield, Oregon Happy to Be Home of The Simpsons

Simpsons creator Matt Groening has set the record straight, ending speculation as to which of America’s many Springfields inspired the location for his long running series. The Portland native tells Smithsonian Magazine that Homer and Marge actually hail from the City of Springfield in his home state of Oregon.

While the story is making its way around the web as breaking news, it’s actually not a complete surprise and the city has the signed photo to prove it. Still, Springfield’s mayor is happy to see the city making headlines because of its pop culture connection.

“I think anytime that we can have some positive publicity and positive feedback is always a good thing and The Simpsons is very popular,” Mayor Christine Lundberg told Just My Show by phone. “…I know a lot of people relate to it and so we definitely can relate to the more endearing things, although we don’t have a nuclear power plant and aliens have never attacked and I…don’t look like Mayor Quimby. I’m not corrupt. And if I just had a sash though, that would be very cool.”

According to the mayor, Groening has yet to visit in recent years, but has a standing invitation to tour the city. Of course, no tour would be complete without taking a picture with the life size Simpsons display at the Springfield Oregon Museum.
